Magento 2: dotSource implements the groundbreaking digital solution for online retailers and mail order companies

As an official »Magento 2 Trained Solution Partner« dotSource GmbH supports online retailers and mail order companies in migrating existing Magento shops to the even more efficient Magento 2. The Jena-based digital agency has had an experienced team of certified Magento 2 developers already since 2015 and is currently realising first Magento 2 projects.

 

The fundamentally re-designed online shop software Magento 2 facilitates flexible shop development and convinces through performance, modularity, scalability, and safety. The switch of existing Magento platforms to Magento 2 gains importance for many retailers as the first version will only be provided with security updates for the next 3 years; new modules will mainly be available for Magento 2 during this period. The new system architecture does not allow for a direct upgrade and the extensions for Magento 1 are not compatible with Magento 2 without adjustment.

dotSource offers online retailers and mail order companies comprehensive support for the migration to the new Magento version. In this, the digital agency ensures an uncomplicated and secure switchover by means of two specific migration tools (as of versions EE 1.11 and CE 1.7). The data migration tool enables the transfer of data, extensions, themes, and customizations. The Magento code migration tool provides scripts that shorten and simplify the time-consuming migration of existing modules significantly through automated processes.

Prior to the migration dotSource examines the implemented version and the system’s setup capability. How complex the switchover to Magento 2 will be depends on the quality of the existing platform as well as the number of modules. Depending on how intricate the customizing during the system development took place, the code, the existing modules, as well as all customer, product, and order data can be transferred into the new system largely automated. Development according to the Magento coding standards, high test coverage, and flawless documentation are the best conditions for a smooth migration.

Magento’s retail order management connects orders from all channels (whether placed via smartphone, TV, tablet, or PC) to the warehouse management, where they are processed centrally. Furthermore Magento 2 has a mobile SDK (software development kit) that allows for the programming of mobile apps.

Also in technical terms the previous version underwent thorough revision: in Magento 2 development is based on Zend Framework 1 and 2 as well as Symfony2. The e-commerce solution now uses jQuery and RequireJS as JavaScript libraries and PHP 5.6 (PHP 7 as of availability). Moreover, a new graphic interface was implemented. The contents or blocks were reloaded via Ajax. Apache Solr is used for search, and on the server side full page caching based on Varnish 4 proves beneficial for the performance.
