Single source of truth instead of data silos: dotSource implements PIM and MDM software for analytical measuring technology manufacturer Analytik Jena

20 July 2020

Press Release

Data has become the »oil of the digital era« and is worth its weight in gold if used correctly. Analytik Jena AG also dealt with this issue and therefore decided to implement a PIM and MDM system. As a strategic and implementation partner, the digital agency dotSource supported the manufacturer of analytical measuring technology from the very beginning.

The more digital a company is, the more data it has. Regardless of whether it is internal master data, customer and product data or supplier data – they all only offer added value to the company if they are maintained and used correctly. Without proper and effective management, however, data chaos occurs. This chaos can only be structured and offer valuable potential if it is properly connected to the system landscape.

Since 1990, Analytik Jena, a specialist for the development and manufacturing of analytical and bioanalytical measuring technology, has collected data of all kinds, and its system landscape has grown in complexity due to processes that did not harmonise well with each other. This made it more difficult to maintain the data and, in some cases, prevented its appropriate, cross-departmental use. In order to be able to use this data in the future, Analytik Jena decided to implement a PIM and MDM system.

Complex Structures with Potential for Optimisation

First and foremost, connecting the individual systems presented a challenge. By using different software solutions that were not connected with each other, different data bases developed. These data structures (for example ERP, CRM and the product lifecycle management system) made mutual exchange difficult. This was partially reflected in their quality: data relevant to marketing, for example, could not be efficiently stored and evaluated in the ERP system, which led to many manual interventions.

This problem was to be solved by implementing an appropriate software. The PIM & MDM software »STEP« from Stibo Systems, one of the world’s leading providers of business-first solutions for multi-domain master data management, was the perfect software solution given the requirements communicated by the client.

Excellent Basis for a Digital Future

The goal of the implementation was to establish a so-called »single source of truth«. All of Analytik Jena’s product data is now collected in the new MDM system and is enriched there in order to be distributed to the content management system and the future e-commerce system. Within just six months, dotSource managed to create a first minimum viable product (MVP) that is capable of production. Analytik Jena can now use it to access the current product data base. With »STEP«, product data is enriched to a high degree so that high-quality data can be distributed at all times. Ultimately, the entire company benefits from this.

»With dotSource, we had a competent partner at our side during the entire implementation and beyond. The new MDM software helps us to get a better overview of our data and use it effectively,« Dr. Marc Diener, Director Product Management & Application at Analytik Jena, remarks.

With the implementation of the PIM and MDM system from Stibo Systems, Analytik Jena has optimised the digitisation of its product documentation and makes sure that it remains visible to its customers and one step ahead of competitors in the future. Moreover, the company created the most important prerequisite for a B2B commerce system by implementing the PIM and MDM system.
